A warning to sports fans for the coming weekend

If you are a sports fan (much less a football fan) you probably have February 1 circled on your calendar. Okay….who uses calendars anymore. But the point is that you know that Super Bowl XLIX is on Sunday, you know the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots are playing in it, and chances are that you have a rooting interest because of a bet you may have placed.

Aside from the wagering that will be put on the game, Super Sunday is also known as one of the deadliest Sundays that will happen during the year. According to a recent Los Angeles Times article, there is a huge difference between the number of alcohol related crashes and injuries on Super Bowl Sunday compared to other Sundays during January and February.

Researchers from the Auto Club of Southern California looked at five years worth a data and found that there was a 77 percent increase in drunk driving crashes compared to other weekends around this time of year.

Indeed, these numbers were specific to Southern California, but the notion that there are likely to be more inebriated drivers on the road than usual is one that is applicable to every region, especially ours.

With that, it is worth reminding our readers that drivers have a duty to use reasonable care while operating a motor vehicle, and part of that duty includes abstaining from alcohol before getting behind the wheel. Alcohol is a mood altering substance that can affect a driver’s judgment and cause him or her to take chances that they would not normally take; hence the increased likelihood of a crash this coming weekend.
