The importance of avoiding ice missiles

Imagine you are travelling along I-90 after a major snow storm. Indeed, you may be taking it easy because the snow plow trucks may not have completely cleared the roads, or there may be blowing snow as remnants of the latest snow may impair your view. While the road may provide its share of hazards (e.g. black ice) drivers should also be wary when driving around (or at least behind) semi-trucks.

Why, you may ask? Because of the prospect of ice missiles.

They may not be commonly known as such, but they are pieces of snow and ice that collect on the tops of semi truck trailers that are not removed. But when a tractor trailer reaches highway speeds, the pieces could become dislodged and fly (like a missile) into the windshields of following cars. While the chances of an ice missile crashing through a windshield may be quite remote, the possibility of it causing a significant distraction is very likely.

Because of this, truck drivers must be vigilant in cleaning their trailers in order to reduce the possibility of ice missiles causing an accident. It is an example of the duty to use reasonable care in operating a motor vehicle. So if a truck driver fails to adequately clean off a trailer that has potential ice missiles on it, and an accident is caused by them, the driver could be held liable for the crash.

If you have been involved in an accident involving an ice missile, an experienced personal injury attorney can help.
