Winter safety tips for pedestrians

It may be difficult to fathom people braving such cold temperatures on foot during this time of year; especially with terrible winter weather bearing down on us. Nevertheless, people do it; which means that pedestrians must be especially careful. Indeed, the treacherous conditions may make walking difficult because the ice concealed by a fresh snow pack. However, people may not realize how dangerous pedestrians may have it because of how difficult it may be to drive in inclement conditions.

With that, we offer the following safety tips for winter pedestrians

Pay attention at intersections – We commonly advise pedestrians to do their best to cross at intersections. Essentially, they have much more legal protection in these zones. However, pedestrians must still pay attention to traffic, as a car that may try to stop may slide through the intersection and into an unsuspecting person.

Look at the driver’s eyes – Sometimes drivers neglect to clear off their windshields and rely on “peephole” driving to get around. This may substantially limit their ability to see their surroundings. In these situations, it is helpful to be able to look into a driver’s eyes before crossing in front of a vehicle. Making eye contact can help you be sure that a driver sees you.

Wear proper shoes – It may go without saying that you should wear good shoes that will keep you warm, but having good traction is important as well. Just like a car can go sliding through an intersection, you don’t want to slip and fall into the path of an oncoming vehicle.
