Helpful tips for driving on black ice

If you are tired of winter, you are probably referring to road conditions that are not always the best after a snowstorm. But spring will come eventually (as it always does). In the meantime, drivers must be careful even after snowstorms because of the possibility of black ice.

This is the term given to thin sheets of ice that form on roads (in shaded areas or under overpasses and bridges) that can cause a driver to lose control of a car and crash. Indeed, the latest headlines have focused on icy roads in the mid-Atlantic states and the northeast, but the Midwest must deal with such dangers as well.

A number of our posts have focused on the basic tenets of safe driving, but this post will highlight what drivers should do in the event they encounter black ice.

Remain calm – The clips of cars sliding perilously out of control are probably a result of panic. Yes, it may be easier said than done, but staying calm may help you avoid a horrible accident after hitting black ice.

Stay off the brakes – You should avoid hard braking because that could make the situation worse. After all, you essentially lose contact with the road while sliding on black ice, and sudden, hard braking could cause you to spin out of control. Instead, try letting of the gas and coasting through the patch.

Don’t be afraid of snowbanks – Indeed, you want to avoid a ditch if at all possible. However, small snow drifts could provide the traction you need to make it back onto the road.
