Second airbag recall to affect two million vehicles

Airbags are included in vehicles to save lives in the event of a car accident. The bags prevent a direct impact of a person’s head into the steering column or the dashboard. There are also elaborate airbag systems that prevent a person’s head from hitting a side window.

However, airbags, like other parts of an automobile, may sometimes be defective. This was the situation last fall when the airbags in millions of vehicles were feared to be defective because the metal casing housing many steering wheel airbags could explode when the airbag inflates, sending shrapnel-like pieces of metal into unsuspecting drivers.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a stern warning to vehicle owners (especially those in humid areas) and urged them to get their cars serviced as soon as possible. The 2014 recall involved more than two million vehicles.

It appears that airbags are still a problem for automakers. According to various media reports, the NHTSA is issuing another recall notice because there are a number of airbags that could spontaneously inflate while a car is running. After all, airbags are supposed to be a protection from accidents, not the cause of them.

The latest recall should be a benefit to automakers and consumers alike. For consumers, this is a chance to get their vehicles serviced so that they can avoid being in a tragic accident caused by a defective airbag. For automakers, it is an opportunity to fulfill an ongoing duty to consumers to address risks caused by defective parts.
