SSA field offices to stay open later

In just over a week, daylight savings time is expected to begin. In our region, that is something that many people look forward to as a sign that our long winter is about to end. The promise of spring is just ahead, and that means that warmer weather and baseball season is just around the corner.

For many disabled Wisconsinites, the longer days may also mean that it may be easier to schedule an appointment at a local Social Security Administration office. The SSA recently announced that field offices will be staying open longer in 2015. This is poised to be a welcome sign to the elderly and disabled, as past budget cuts led to some offices being closed, while others had their hours curtailed.

The SSA attempted to get people to take advantage of online services, which ostensibly would reduce wait times and give people more services without having to leave the comfort of their homes. However, many people who needed assistance were not able to use the Internet or did not have the experience or patience to navigate the SSA’s online system.

The reduction of services led to widespread complaints which disability advocates took to Congress. Of course, legislators slammed the SSA and its commitment to those who needed services the most. Like some problems in America, where there are enough complaints and enough people listening, things begin to change. When it comes to one of the largest bureaucracies in Washington, this is no different.

As such, field offices will stay open until 4:00 p.m. instead of 3:00 p.m.

Now if we could only get Mother Nature to answer our complaints.
