Four things that can help you after an accident

With the weather getting better, the prospect of encountering ice patches diminishes every day. However, the potential for accidents still remains. After all, spring weather brings more people on the road, including motorcycles and bicyclists. Because of this, it is important to know what to do in the event of an accident. Your emotions may be running high, you may be injured or you may be in shock.

With that said, we will highlight a few things that can help you after an accident to preserve your legal rights.

Check to see if everyone is okay – Yes, you will eventually want to see how much damage your vehicle has sustained, but finding out if anyone is hurt is paramount. If someone is hurt, obviously you want to call an ambulance. But more importantly, if someone is unconscious or has severe neck pain, do not move them until the paramedics arrive.

Move your vehicle – If you are able to, move your vehicle to the shoulder or away from traffic. You would be surprised how many additional accidents occur because of drivers not seeing disabled cars on the road in time.

Talk to witnesses – Indeed, there will likely be an accident report prepared by the responding authority, but it is helpful to seek out witnesses and learn what they saw. It is also helpful to take down their information, including their phone number and address.

Take pictures – While we criticize the use of cell phones while driving, they come in handy after an accident. Taking pictures at the scene can help preserve your memory.
