Memorial Day weekend safe driving tips

Memorial Day weekend is upon us; and with it, the unofficial gateway to summer is here. Scores of people across Wisconsin will treat it as a reason to get away to their favorite cabin or resort. With so many people thinking the same thing, it is likely that there will be more people on the road than usual. With heavier traffic volumes, the chances for a car or motorcycle accident increases as well.

To avoid potential accidents, there are several things that a driver can (and should) do. This post will focus on a few of them.

Give yourself plenty of time –  It is no secret that feeling rushed can lead to aggressive driving. The same could be said when construction or another traffic accident leads to slowdowns. To avoid this dilemma, try to give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination.

Put the phone down – Indeed, we talked about the dangers that teen drivers should avoid during prom season, but the reality is that adults use their cell phones while driving too. With traffic being heavier than usual this weekend, distracted driving creates more of a chance for an accident to occur. So like the public safety announcement says, “It can wait.”

Don’t drive drunk – It may be obvious that drunk driving is illegal, but some people may rationalize it by saying that they are only tipsy or that they are just buzzed. But like the public service announcements say (again), “buzzed driving is drunk driving.” So don’t drink and drive. If you have been drinking, call Uber or use a designated driver.
