The dangers of using a cell phone while driving

Summer time in Wisconsin is known for road trips. Wisconsin Dells is not a top summer vacation destination for nothing. And with the Fourth of July holiday weekend coming up, it is expected that tens of thousands of people will be taking to the road across the state.

The increased traffic on the road also increases the chances for an accident to occur. Combine that with the potential number of drivers who may be on their phones for one reason or another (i.e. talking with friends, confirming reservations, looking for directions) and driving on the highway could be a recipe for disaster.

But for most drivers, using their cell phone while going 65 miles per hour on I-94 or I-90 is a benign danger. After all, there are hands free devices that limit a person’s need to take their eyes off the road. Nevertheless, distracted driving is more than just talking while driving. More people use their phones to access their favorite applications such as Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. The desire to stay in touch may be so intoxicating that it could compromise one’s safety. It can also lead to serious legal liability.

Basically, driving while talking on a cell (or while texting) could be viewed as a breach of the duty to use reasonable care behind the wheel. If the breach is found to be the proximate cause of an accident, the offending driver could be held liable for the injuries suffered.

With that said, it is worth putting down the phone until you reach your destination.
