Lessons to be learned from the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally

The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota is arguably the premier event for riders in the upper Midwest; and perhaps the country. The 75th version of this annual event brought more than 1 million people to the rally. As the event ended on Sunday, 13 people had lost their lives in accidents. While the event is over, people will still be riding motorcycles until the winter begins. With that, it is a good time for a reminder of the tips that can keep riders safe.

This post will highlight a few.

Wear a good helmet – While Wisconsin does not have a helmet law, wearing one can increase your chances of survival in the event you are in a crash. But when you shopping for helmets, be sure that the one you choose has been certified by the federal government for safety. This may not include novelty helmets.

Don’t drink and ride – Law enforcement indicated that 220 people were arrested from driving (or riding) while under the influence of alcohol. Simply put, riding a motorcycle while buzzed or drunk is a bad idea because of how alcohol can affect a person’s judgment and balance.

Know your bike – For those who are purchasing a new motorcycle, it is important to know and feel its capabilities. It may be a good idea to go on a test ride just like potential car buyers take a test drive. With that, you can minimize the risk of buying a bike that is too powerful for you for you to maneuver in emergency situations.
