Holiday travel safety tips that most people don't think of

Most people know and understand that highway traffic before and after Labor Day weekend can be troublesome. It is essentially a tradition across Wisconsin for families to have one last summer get together before fall begins. This year is poised to be no different with gas prices dropping and more people having income (and time off) to drive to their favorite vacation spot.

But with more people on the road, drivers have to be extra cautious. Indeed, many drivers understand that they have to share the road, be mindful of speed limits and refrain from using alcohol, but it there are additional things that drivers should be mindful of as they embark on their holiday weekend journeys.

Complete mechanical and safety checks – Your vehicle should be in good working order, including brakes, suspension and necessary fluids. While many accidents are caused through driver error, mechanical problems can also lead to car crashes. The same could be said about items attached to the roof of a car, such as luggage or bicycle racks if they become loose and fall off while the car is in motion.

Embrace turn-by-turn directions – While distracted driving has not received a great deal of national attention this summer, it is still a problem among young and older drivers alike. One aspect is that drivers looking at mobile maps while looking for their destination, and taking their eyes off the road. To avoid this, use turn-by-turn direction modules where you can hear directions being given to you. These modules commonly give you enough warning before turns must be made.

In the meantime, we hope our readers have a safe and memorable holiday weekend.
