School is back in session. Drivers should beware.

Now that Labor Day weekend has come and gone in Wisconsin, hundreds of thousands of school age children will be going back to school. Yes, it seems like only yesterday that schools were letting out for summer vacation, but September is here again, and a new school year begins.

With that, we find it prudent to remind our readers of how important it is to watch out for pedestrians in the mornings and afternoons. According to a recent ABC News.com report, bus drivers across the country are particularly concerned about how drivers are blatantly disregarding rules regarding school buses.

Essentially, bus drivers see a considerable number of moving violations each day; from drivers not stopping when a bus’ stop sign is out, to passing and squatting before a bus.

Because of this, drivers should know that they have a duty to use reasonable care while behind the wheel. This means that they must limit distractions while driving so that they can react to hazards in a timely manner. They must also adhere to speed limits around school zones and follow laws regarding specific care around school buses.

Should a driver fail to use such care, and such a failure results in an accident, the offending driver could be held liable. This means that the injured party could seek monetary damages for pain and suffering, medical expenses and other damages.

So we implore our readers to watch out for students while going to work; whether they are kids going to first grade or college students going to their first class.
