Never too early to review winter driving safety tips

November in Wisconsin is a time of change. It is almost like we are on borrowed time before snow begins to fall and roads become difficult to navigate. While it appears that we will not see flakes before Thanksgiving, travel on roads may not be so treacherous (especially before the Thanksgiving holiday).

Nevertheless, it is never too soon to review winter driving safety tips. With that said, this post will review some of the steps drivers should take to be safe during the coming winter months.

Check the tread on your tires – Ideally, you should check the tread on your tires a few times a year. With the change of seasons taking further effect, there is no time like the present to conduct the Lincoln head penny test. This simple test can tell you if you need new tires.

Beware of black ice – This is the name given to thin sheets of ice that are invisible to the driver’s eye until it is too late. Indeed, many roads will be treated with sand and salt in order to alleviate the risk of losing control. However, there some areas that may not be treated. In these areas, drivers must be especially careful.

Reduce speed when necessary – As weather conditions deteriorate, reducing speed may also help you avoid being in an accident.

Wear your seatbelt –  It is more than cliché to say that a seatbelt can save your life in the event of a crash. After all, a seatbelt can prevent you from being ejected from a vehicle in an accident.
