Seatbelts in school buses could be a federal rule

For kids, getting to school shouldn’t be dangerous; especially those who are riding on school buses. After all, when kids are on a bus, they should be safer than those walking to school. When a school bus is involved in an accident, the children on the bus should be protected. However, there are some instances where kids may be at significant risk of suffering harm because they are not wearing seatbelts.

Unlike children riding in passenger cars, kids on school buses are not required to buckle up as a matter of law. If the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has its way, this may change. According to a recent CBS News.com report, the head of the NHTSA is pushing for rules that would require school bus companies to include seat restraints.

Indeed, the notion of keeping children safe and protected in the event of a crash is certainly a popular idea. The chances of children being thrown about the bus in an accident, particularly a rollover crash are high. With seatbelts, this risk would be significantly reduced. However, the cost of implementing a new rule could be cost prohibitive. With retrofitting buses with seatbelts averaging $7,000 to $10,000 per vehicle, there are many school districts that may not have the finances to comply with such a rule.

In the meantime, using reasonable care in the operation of buses (and in driving near them) can be helpful in keeping children safe. If you have been involved in a school bus crash, or have a child who was injured, an experienced personal injury attorney can help.
