A note from truck drivers: Share the road

A number of our posts this holiday season have to do with safe driving; particularly from the perspective of the individual motorist. After all, there will be millions of drivers on the road later this week for the Christmas holiday. Indeed, it is prudent for drivers to be aware of each other, but it should not be ignored that semi-trucks are the most dangerous on the road because of their size.

Despite these dangers, it is critical for drivers not to put themselves in dangerous situations with regard to trucks. After all, trucks are not as maneuverable as cars, they take more time to speed up and need more distance to slow down. Because of this, the number of drivers on the road and winter weather, it is imperative that drivers be careful around semi trucks

These possibilities prompted the American Trucking Association to issue a press release reminding drivers of the need to share the road. The recommendations included the following:

Don’t cut in front of trucks – As we noted before, trucks take longer to slow down and stop because of their size. A car that cuts in front of a  truck runs the risk of being rear-ended.

Be aware of a truck driver’s blind spots – Essentially, if you can’t see a driver in his or her mirrors, chances are that the driver can’t see you. This makes you invisible, and more likely to be in an accident as a truck turns or changes lanes.

Know your exits – If you are making a long trip, knowing where your exits are, so that you don’t make any sudden lane changes, can keep you safe.
