How to avoid parking lot accidents

In our last post, we highlighted the increased risk of accidents in shopping mall parking lots. After all, the holiday season brings out the best…and worst in people, and a parking lot exemplifies this adage. We gave some helpful tips on how to preserve one’s rights after a crash, but we also find it important to educate our readers on how to avoid these accidents altogether.

As such, this post will focus on prudent actions and defensive maneuvers that can help in avoiding a parking lot crash.

Mind the speed limit – It may seem obvious that drivers must slow down in parking lots, but the allure (and frustration) of getting a prime parking spot may lead drivers to gun it to get to an open spot. Of course, this could lead to an accident, so slow down when looking for a spot and pay attention to the applicable speed limit.

Back into a spot – More people are using their backup cameras to guide themselves into a proper spot, because it will help when trying to leave a parking space. Essentially, you have a better view of traffic in front of you, which can reduce the possibility of getting into an accident when leaving a space.

Be patient – As we mentioned earlier, a good parking spot can lead to irrational decisions and actions. Because of this, it pays to be patient and wait for spots to open up. Research suggests that a parking spot opens up every nine minutes if you wait in one area.
