To buy or not to buy rental insurance...that is the question

Later this week, millions of people will travel for the Christmas holiday. According to a number of media reports, a majority of them will take to the road to get to their favorite destination. With gas prices being their lowest in more than five years, estimates are that there may be a record number of drivers on the road before the holiday weekend ends.

For those who are going to be travelling long distances by car, it is possible that they will rent a car from a commercial agency. Indeed, renting a car comes with a host of additional costs, including state and local taxes, recovery fees as well as optional equipment and services. One of these that is commonly offered is insurance. So the question you will undoubtedly get when you are at the counter is: Do you want to buy insurance?

The answer depends on your individual circumstances and your appetite for risk. Essentially, your own car insurance policy should follow you regardless of the car you are driving. The same should apply with your homeowner’s insurance. This analysis is important because the coverage provided by the rental car company is not cheap. In fact, it could be nearly an additional 20 percent of the rental fee for additional coverage that you may not need.

Because of this, it is helpful to check with your insurer to see whether, and to what extent, your coverage will follow you when you rent a car.
