Winter weather is coming, so drivers should be aware

If you feel like winter has been a cakewalk so far, you might be in good company. We did not get a significant amount of snow in our region until Christmas. However, the weather is about to get frightful (even though the Christmas season is in the rear view mirror). With that, drivers in LaCrosse and throughout Western Wisconsin must be vigilant as road conditions deteriorate.

Indeed, we have talked about the danger of black ice in our posts (and we will likely do so again). However, with a major snowstorm imminent, it is prudent to discuss how snow can be dangerous on the road.

Of course, snow could likely cover black ice, or could melt and become icy, but inevitably there will be drivers who, after parking outside for a long period of time, will try to move quickly out of a parking spot and only clear a small window of snow from their windshield; whether it is the front or the back. This practice is called peephole driving, and it can lead to terrible accidents.

The reason is simple. When a driver only clears a small window, they may not be able to check their blind spots when changing lanes or see hazards coming at them from different angles. It essentially is like driving with blinders on. Peephole driving could be viewed as a failure to use reasonable care while driving, because a reasonable person would be diligent in clearing off all windows before heading into traffic.

If you have been in an accident with a peephole driver, an experienced personal injury attorney can help.
