Could your emotions lead to a crash?

We all know that driving can sometime raise our emotions. Between traffic jams and other bad drivers we can sometimes lose our tempers. However, wouldn’t it be ironic that our emotions were the very things that got us into accidents in the first place?

According to a recent ABC report, the chances of a driver getting into an accident increases dramatically when they are emotionally distracted. Research from Virginia Tech’s Transportation Institute found that when drivers are visibly agitated, sad or just plain angry, they are much more likely to be distracted by their immediate emotions, which raises the likelihood that they will be in an accident.

In fact, researchers found that emotional distractions were the culprit behind more than 30 percent of the 11 million crashes that occur on American roads each year. With more people on the roads these days because of cheaper gas and lower unemployment, keeping one’s emotions in check is more important now as it ever was.

After all, keeping one’s cool is part of a driver’s duty to use reasonable care while behind the wheel. Indeed, adhering to speed laws and reducing distractions is a big part of being safe on the road, but being in the right state of mind is critical as well. A person who is angry may take out their frustrations on other drivers by driving aggressively is more likely to be held liable in a crash.

People hurt in a crash caused by an aggressive driver can seek legal remedies, including compensation for pain and suffering, lost wages and other costs.
