How to avoid disaster on icy roads

As hearty Wisconsinites, we have seen this movie before. Cold temperatures followed by snow; a brief warming period  then another temperature drop. Take these weather events together, and it is a recipe for disaster on the road.

Indeed, we live in a region where we have the capabilities to clear roads and provide traction for drivers, but drivers still need to be careful when weather events occur.

Case in point, consider the weather system that has brought ice and snow to the East Coast. According to a recent report, the system is estimated at being 1,200 miles long and has affected traffic from Georgia to Maine. The storm is also blamed for more than 2,000 auto accidents and four deaths. Most accidents were caused by drivers sliding off slippery, icy roads.

With that, we will revisit a few tips drivers should take to heart while driving this winter.

Be patient – When you are worried about being late or getting through traffic, you are more likely to speed or drive aggressively. If you have to increase your speed when road conditions are questionable, you are putting yourself and other drivers at risk. As such, be patient and allow yourself plenty of time to get to your destination.

Stay off the brakes – If you feel like you are sliding or you temporary lose contact with the road, it may be hard to avoid the temptation to slam on the brakes. But resisting temptation may save your life. Abruptly hitting the brakes may send you into an uncontrollable spin. So be wary of this when you hit the road.
