Could lower gas prices lead to more traffic deaths?

It is natural to enjoy the recent trend of cheap gas prices. After all, most of us remember vividly the experience of paying nearly four dollars for a gallon of gas, and hardly any of us want to go back to those days. However, low gas prices have brought many other people out of their homes and onto the roads. Again, while this may seem like a good thing, more people on the road could have its drawbacks.

The obvious problem is traffic. More cars on the road during peak hours of the day means that traffic is more likely to slow down; sometimes creating annoying bottlenecks that impede the flow of traffic. The frustrations that come from drivers in bumper to bumper traffic can lead to road rage and other accidents

The other issue that comes from having more people on the road is that more people are dying in car accidents. According to a report produced by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, traffic related deaths were up more than 10 percent during the first nine months of 2015 compared to 2014.

The ominous statistics highlight the need for drivers to use reasonable care while behind the wheel. This means that drivers must take particular care to limit distractions, maintain proper speeds in inclement weather, and to refrain from using alcohol and other mood altering drugs before driving. If a driver fails to use such care, and such a failure is the proximate cause of an accident, the driver could be held liable for the injuries stemming from the crash.
