By the numbers, distracted driving is still a problem

What a difference a few days makes. Last week we saw snow and ice and cars sliding off roads as a result. This week, we are seeing the picture perfect weather that we expect out of spring. With that, it is expected that more drivers will be on the road, which may increase the likelihood of car accidents.

The warmer weather also increases the possibility that distracted drivers may be involved in traffic accidents. This post will highlight some of the important numbers behind an unresolved epidemic.

20, 23 and 27 – According to the NHTSA, drivers in their 20’s make up 23 percent of the nation’s drivers, but they are involved in 23 percent of fatal crashes. Also, 20-somethings make up, 27 percent of distracted drivers.

660,000 – At a given moment during the day, there are nearly 660,000 drivers on the road that are looking at or manipulating a cell phone while they are behind the wheel. Whether they are on the freeway or on a residential street, distracted driving is still a dangerous practice.

5 and 200 – The average time a driver takes their eyes off the road to look at a cell phone is five seconds. When driving at 55 miles per hour, a car can travel more than two football fields (200 yeards).

These numbers exemplify the need for drivers to use reasonable care while behind the wheel. If a driver fails to do so, and such a failure is found to be the proximate cause in an accident, the driver can be held liable
