The re-learning process for motorcycle riders and drivers Part II

A month ago, a few days of warm weather had us convinced that winter was over and that spring had sprung. Then we faced the reality that in our region, winter weather typically lasts until April (even though the official start of spring was March 22nd.

With the calendar turning to April, we can be certain that winter is officially over. The warm weather will also bring out motorcycle riders, and drivers must have their annual reintroduction to them. Essentially, drivers must get used to seeing motorcycles again. While drivers have a duty to look out for riders, they may not always do so. As such, motorcycle riders must adhere to the following tips.

Stay out of blind spots – As we alluded to before, drivers have a long history of not seeing motorcycles. However, riders can reduce the possibility of being in an accident by staying out of drivers’ blind spots.

Don’t drink and ride – While you might not see the public service announcements about drunk driving until closer to Memorial Day weekend, it is still important for motorcycle riders to avoid drinking alcohol or using mood altering substances before getting out on the road.

Mind the speed limit – The thrill of opening up the throttle is a joy of most riders. However, with many accidents caused by excessive speed, it is important for riders to stay within the speed limit.

Wear your helmet – Even if you are the most prudent rider, you still can put yourself at risk by not wearing a helmet.
