Animal bites lead to injury of toddler

The majority of dogs in Wisconsin and around the country never attack a person. When they do, animal bites can lead to serious injuries and have traumatic emotional consequences, no matter what the age of the victim. If that victim is a small child, the potential long-term effects of an accident may be more difficult to ascertain. A toddler was recently injured when a dog attacked her in another state.

A 15-month-old girl was being fed by a relative inside a unit near her home. Evidently, a female terrier mix smelled the food and attacked the toddler. The dog had been nowhere near the child, but bit her in the face when going for the food, according to reports.

Surveillance videos from home cameras outside the home showed several people exiting the unit visibly upset. The mother was shown coming out holding her child. The girl was transported by paramedics to a nearby hospital, where she received 19 stitches on her face. She was released from the hospital, but her parents suspect the child will now be fearful around dogs because of the attack. The dog was euthanized by local animal services.

Animal bites are very traumatic and often result in serious injury or even death. Families in Wisconsin that have experienced such attacks may decide to file a personal injury or wrongful death lawsuit to help offset medical expenses or funeral costs. Wisconsin is a strict liability state, so a dog owner may be found liable even if there was no negligence on the owner's part. An attorney familiar with personal injury law can help families obtain compensation from a successful claim.
