Car accidents and traumatic brain injury

Car accidents can leave their victims with years of impaired health due to various injuries. Traumatic brain injury is one type of condition that often results from a crash and can continue to affect your life for years to come.

TBI can happen when your brain endures a violent impact. Along with falls and assaults, car crashes number among the top causes of TBI. Even if you do not hit your head against a surface, TBI may occur if you come to an abrupt halt while traveling very fast due to the brain's impact againt the interior of the skull.

TBI can range between severe and relatively mild. Even mild symptoms present cause for concern, as they still indicate damage to the brain.

Mild TBI symptoms to watch for

Mild to moderate TBI can result in symptoms that may include headaches, vertigo, nausea, confusion, ringing in the ears, frustration and mild impairments to motor or speech functions. Many lose consciousness briefly, although some may not remember this happening. Typically, a post-accident emergency room visit will not reveal the presence of TBI. Symptoms can manifest within days or even weeks afterwards. Watch out for unusual sensations or psychological changes and see a physician if you notice any.

Severe TBI

Severe TBI generally causes a prolonged loss of consciousness (over 30 minutes in length). Within hours or days of the accident, victims may experience memory loss, coma, paralysis or severe cognitive, speech or motor impairment. Mild TBI symptoms may present as well.

Available treatments

Recommended treatment depends on a patient's individual circumstances. Possibilities may include surgery, rehabilitative therapy and prescription medication. Some patients may need admission to a long-term care facility or in-home assistance.

Even mild TBI symptoms can decrease quality of life and make it very difficult to find or keep employment. If you suffer from TBI due to a car accident, consult an experienced lawyer about the possibility of legal recovery for medical treatments, lost earnings and other potential damages.
