Wisconsin car accidents: Alcohol possibly caused head-on crash

Many thousands of drivers share the roadways in Wisconsin and around the country safely every day. Car accidents may occur because of weather, road conditions, vehicle malfunctions or distracted driving. In some cases, a driver is impaired, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. A recent crash near Janesville is under investigation to determine if alcohol was a factor in the incident.

A Janesville police sergeant reports that the accident occurred on Highway 51. A pickup truck was traveling northbound in the southbound lane. The truck hit a sports utility vehicle head-on near the Southern Wisconsin Regional Airport.

When emergency personnel arrived, the man driving the pickup truck was alive but unconscious. According to police, the female SUV driver's injuries were less severe. The drivers of both vehicles were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of their injuries. There were no passengers in either vehicle.

Police reports indicate that both vehicles likely experienced a dead stop after the crash, causing severe damage to both vehicle's hoods. While the crash is still under investigation, police officers have not indicated that either driver was intoxicated at the time of the accident. However, the sergeant stated that alcohol may have been a factor.

When impaired drivers cause car accidents, that typically constitutes negligent or even reckless behavior, depending on the specific facts. Victims of negligence, or the surviving family members of deceased victims, may choose to file a personal injury or wrongful death claim in civil court. A successful lawsuit may result in compensation that could help with unexpected medical expenses and other monetary losses. A Wisconsin attorney can assist victims and/or their families with the legal process and work toward achieving a favorable outcome.
