Wisconsin car accidents: 4 dead, 5 injured in fatal crash

Running a stop sign may not seem to be a major offense for Wisconsin residents. However, in some circumstances, the action may lead to serious car accidents, significant injuries and even loss of life. A recent accident involving failure to stop at an intersection near Cornell claimed the lives of four people.

According to the Chippewa County Sheriff, an SUV traveling north ran a stop sign. It struck a westbound truck hauling a trailer. The impact caused both vehicles to leave the highway and go into a ditch.

Police reports state that there were nine people in total in the two vehicles. Officers say that both drivers survived the accident. However, four passengers were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Four people were transported to a nearby hospital in ambulances, while one passenger was airlifted. The five survivors suffered injuries not thought to be life-threatening.

The names of the deceased victims have not been released, pending notification of family members. The accident remains under investigation by the Wisconsin State Patrol and other law enforcement agencies. The WSP officers plan to reconstruct the crash to officially verify the cause of the accident.

When investigation reveals that negligent behavior contributed to car accidents, surviving family members of deceased victims may elect to pursue wrongful death lawsuits against the party or parties believed responsible for the crashes. While a lawsuit can never undo what has already occurred, a favorable outcome in a case can compensate family members for funeral expenses, damages for loss of earnings, grief and suffering. An experienced personal injury attorney can guide families through the complex legal process and work toward achieving a favorable result in the lawsuit. Injured victims who survive their injuries have a similar right to pursue personal injury claims.
