Wrong-way accidents may result in wrongful death claims

No one goes through life expecting it will be without some sorrow and heartache. However, the wrongful death of a special person may seem like the end of the world for those who mourn, especially when the victim is a member of a small and close-knit family. A Wisconsin family is still in shock following the horrific accident that took the life of their loved one and two of his friends.

The senseless act occurred in the early evening after police received numerous calls reporting that a car had crossed the median and was driving in the wrong direction on the interstate. After traveling about three miles west in the eastbound lane, the car collided head-on with another vehicle. That vehicle burst into flames.

All three men in the car, ages 32, 27 and 29, died at the scene. The driver of the wrong-way vehicle was transported by helicopter to a hospital. It is possible he will not survive his injuries. Media reports say Wisconsin police have not determined if the driver was impaired by drugs or alcohol. No charges have yet been filed.

While it is still uncertain what caused the driver to cross into the wrong lane and fail to negotiate oncoming traffic, what is known is that three families suffered the loss of people who were important to their lives. The hole left in their hearts may never be filled, but there may be ways to pursue at least some sense of justice. In similar situations, families have chosen to discuss the possibility of filing a wrongful death lawsuit in civil court to hold those believed responsible for an accident accountable for their actions.
