Animal bites: Neighbor hospitalized after attack by dog

Neighbors often lend a hand to one another in Wisconsin and elsewhere around the country. When people are helping out in the neighborhood, it is unlikely that they expect animal bites to factor into the situation. However, this recently happened to a man in another state when he was bitten by a dog while working on a neighbor's fence.

According to the local fire department, a man was walking back and forth between his home and one across the street as he was working on the fence. A bulldog-terrier mix dog weighing between 35 to 45 lbs. and attacked the man. When rescue personnel arrived, they treatment the man on the scene before transporting him via helicopter to a nearby hospital. The man remains hospitalized with serious injuries.

The dog's owner has been interviewed by area animal services official. Reports state that the dog had been injured as the bite victim tried to defend himself. Animal services did not remove the dog from the home. An investigation of the incident is ongoing.

Animal experts offer advice to avoid being bitten by a dog. Even if the dog is familiar to someone, it is important that the animal is still given its space. Also, an unfamiliar dog should never be approached.

Animal bites can cause extensive injuries to victims that require hospitalization, medical treatment or trauma therapy. To help offset these expenses, victims may decide to file a personal injury lawsuit. In a strict liability state like Wisconsin, owners are liable for the unprovoked actions of their pets even if the animal has never shown previous aggression. A personal injury attorney can review available options and recommend the best course of action for victims and their families.
