3 telltale signs of a neck injury

When you suffer external injuries such as bruising or lacerations, the visual evidence proves that you have been hurt. It is not so easy to detect injuries to your muscles that may not be immediately visible. This is certainly true if you have suffered injuries in a car accident and do not immediately experience any symptoms. Still, your head, neck and back are particularly vulnerable to being hurt.

Whiplash is a common neck injury that follows physical trauma such as a collision. According to MedicineNet, the cost of this single injury is as high as 30 billion dollars annually in the U.S. If you suspect you may be suffering from whiplash, be on the lookout for the following three symptoms:

1. Pain and stiffness

One of the first symptoms whiplash victims often notice is pain throughout their neck. It may radiate to your back and into a headache, and be accompanied by stiffness. Even if these symptoms are subtle, they can quickly worsen. You should seek out medical care as soon as possible to ensure that you receive the treatment you need.

2. Limited range of motion

The aforementioned stiffness can pose a number of problems. In addition to the obvious discomfort you can experience, it typically limits your range of motion. This makes it difficult to turn your head, lift it up and down and generally move freely. This can make life difficult and, more importantly, dangerous. With a limited range of motion, your vision is limited, too. Tasks such as driving and walking can be risky.

3. Fatigue and weakness

Pain, stiffness and limited motion are enough to make anybody tired. Indeed, fatigue and weakness round out the primary symptoms indicative of a whiplash neck injury. If you are feeling fatigued in addition to experiencing pain in your neck, you should pay attention to your body and pursue necessary treatment. Do not let your injury worsen--act now so that you can make a full recovery.
