Taking steps to prevent motorcycle accidents during riding season

The weather is improving and Wisconsin residents are pulling their motorcycles out of their garages. Many of these people have not been on their bikes in months and are out of practice. Authorities are encouraging all riders and drivers to take proper precautions in order to prevent motorcycle accidents

Motorcyclists are being asked to thoroughly check their bikes before riding. Checking the general condition of the bike can help to prevent many accidents before they occur. This includes checking to make sure that the brakes are functioning properly, the tire pressure is where it should be, and performing other forms of basic maintenance.

They are also encouraged to wear the proper gear when riding. Many may believe that wearing a functional helmet is enough, but riding gear also includes eye protection, long-sleeved shirts, long pants, boots that cover the ankles and gloves. Wearing bright colors can also help to make the riders more visible to other drivers.

Preventing accidents, however, is not solely up to the motorcyclists on the road. Authorities have also asked other drivers to be aware of the growing number of motorcyclists. Slowing down while driving, especially in the early weeks of spring when many riders are becoming reacquainted with their bikes, can help drivers and riders alike to avoid accidents as well.

As the weather continues to improve more and more motorcyclists will begin to venture out onto the roadways. Unfortunately, more riders mean that there is a greater chance of motorcycle accidents occurring. Wisconsin residents who have been injured in an accident may wish to consult with a local attorney. These victims may be entitled to compensation for medical costs and other monetary damages sustained.
