Report: Deadly Semi-Truck Accident in Wisconsin

On October 9th, 2023, a semi-truck was involved in a fatal accident near Highway 25 on a rural stretch of road in Nelson, Wisconsin. The tractor trailer overturned and caught fire. It was carrying several thousands of gallons of manure at the time of the collision. Tragically, the rollover crash results in the death of the truck driver. The single vehicle accident is still under a more comprehensive investigation by the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office.

Rollover Crashes are Extremely Dangerous

Rollover accidents are disproportionately likely to cause catastrophic injuries and fatalities. These crashes can pose severe risks due to their violent nature. While rollovers make up a relatively small share of all motor vehicle collisions, they make up a far higher share of deadly collisions.

Semi-Trucks are at Higher Risk of Rollovers

When carrying the maximum allowable load in Wisconsin, a commercial truck can weigh up to 80,000 pounds. Large commercial truck accidents can be exceptionally dangerous. Notably, semi-trucks are also at a higher rate of rollover collisions. Here are some of most common reasons why large tractor trailers are more likely to end up in rollover accidents:

  • High Center of Gravity: Semi-trucks have a high center of gravity. It is a fact about the nature of large trucks that makes them inherently more vulnerable to rollover crashes.
  • Load Shifts (Improper Loading): Commercial trucks must be properly loaded. If a truck is not loaded well, it could be more susceptible to a rollover crash.
  • Wind Vulnerability: Semi-trucks also have large, flat surfaces. They are often more vulnerable in adverse well conditions, especially when there are strong crosswinds.
  • Speed: Driving at high speeds—especially around curves—can make it difficult for drivers to maintain control, leading to a higher risk of the truck rolling over.

A negligent truck driver, negligent trucking company, or any other negligent party can be held legally responsible for a commercial crash. If you were hurt in a rollover collision with a large truck in Wisconsin, you have the right to seek compensation for economic and non-economic losses, including for vehicle repairs, medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
